Drive past the Altoona Public Library, and you’ll spot something unusual—a massive metal frog perched outside, getting ready to hop into a new adventure. Meet Freddy, the beloved amphibian mascot of the library and the star of the “Leap Into Learning” statue by Iowa artist John Brommel.
A Work of Art with a Deeper Meaning
Installed in 2013, this striking public art piece is more than just eye-catching—it represents the importance of education and community. Brommel, known for his metal sculptures, crafted Freddy mostly out of recycled aluminum. His intricate eyes, made from welded aluminum circles, give him a lifelike and friendly expression. Freddy is completely hollow, but he weighs around 500 pounds!
Built for Learning
Freddy wasn’t created just for looks—he was also a learning project. Brommel used the statue as a training piece for students, teaching them the careful process of piecing together small metal bits to create curves and shapes. The inspiration behind the sculpture comes from nature itself. Frogs are an important indicator of a pond’s health, just as libraries reflect the overall well-being of a community. By placing Freddy outside the Altoona Public Library, Brommel made a powerful statement about the value of learning and literacy.
A Ribbit-ing Local Celebrity
Since his arrival, Freddy has become a beloved icon in Altoona. In the summer of 2013, the library held a naming contest, and the community officially dubbed him Freddy. Over the years, he’s been a favorite for photos, playtime, and even a bit of mischief. In 2017, Freddy went on an unexpected “vacation” when the library staff playfully photoshopped images of him on adventures around the world.

Thanks to Ted’s Body Shop, Freddy received a makeover in 2018, restoring his vibrant look and ensuring he remains a staple of Altoona’s public art scene for years to come.
